Why Portrait Sculpture?
So you know you want to commission -- or make -- a portrait. Why sculpture? Why not painting or photography? Here are some good reasons to consider:
- Sculpture is timeless. It's been around since the dawn of mankind and won't fade.
- Sculpture isn't flat, and neither are people.
- Sculpture can go outside.
- Portrait busts are steeped in Classical and Renaissance tradition.
- The color won't clash with your interior...ever.
- A bust from generations past has a vital presence, where as an old painting or photograph has a nostalgic, distant feeling. This has to do with two things: the psychology of viewing a life-size object in the round, and also the isolation of the viewer from the image caused by the frame and the self-contained light source in the painting or photograph.
